Radiant Journey
City of Toronto - University Ave.

Client: Friends of University Avenue

Collaborators: Studio F Minus and Mulvey & Banani International Inc.

Engineers: Blackwell Engineering

This project was the vision of Christine Ralphs who founded the Friends of University, a non-profit organization of private citizens working in partnership with the City of Toronto to illuminate and activate the grand boulevard of Toronto, University Avenue.

Sixpenny provided design consultation, fabrication, and installation of the 202 aluminum light fixtures located along the centre median of University Avenue between College St. and Elm St.

    • Extruded aluminum light fixtures with welded 1/2” baseplates.

    • Powdercoated finish

    • 5/8” thick galvanized steel baseplates

    • Sixpenny’s involvement in the project began with design consultation with Studio F Minus to determine the correct sizing of the internal features of the reeds

    • We then oversaw production of the dies used for extruding the aluminum reeds and handled all subsequent stages of fabrication. This included cutting to length, machining, welding, powdercoating and final assembly of the LED components

    • We worked with Blackwell Engineers to size the ballast plates and complete destructive testing on the reeds to ensure they met strength requirements

    • Installation was completed in the summer of 2021
