MCity Windscreens
City of Mississauga - Burnhamthorpe Rd W and Confederation Pkwy

Client: Urban Capital

Artist: Ed Pien

Engineers: Blackwell Engineering

Photography: Torifoto

These windscreens were designed by artist Ed Pien and installed at MCity in Mississauga to provide some shelter to pedestrians from the high winds that blow unimpeded down this stretch of Burnhamthorpe Rd. W

Sixpenny provided mechanical design, fabrication and installation for these four windscreens.

    • 1/2” laser cut aluminum with 5/8” frames and baseplates.

    • Powdercoated finish

    • Sixpenny’s involvement in the project began with design consultation to ensure the construction of the windscreens were adequately designed for the high winds experienced at the site. We worked with Blackwell Engineers to size the frames and anchors appropriately.

    • We used artwork files provided by the artist to create the cad files correctly formatted for laser cutting

    • The 1/2” artwork panels and 5/8” frame pieces were cut with a 12kw fiber laser

    • Machining, welding and finishing were performed by Sixpenny before the finished assemblies were sent out for powdercoating

    • Installation was completed in the fall of 2023
